Twenty One Pilots will break out of their pandemic hiatus in style this fall with a unique tour that will have them playing a series of residency-style stints in cities around the U.S. and England. The 2021-2022 outing, dubbed the “Takeøver Tour,” will kick off on Sept. 21 with a four-night run in Denver with the band setting up at the 550-capacity Bluebird Theater, before moving on to the 1,600-capacity Ogden Theatre the next night, then the 3,950-capacity Mission Ballroom on Sept. 23 and wrapping up at the 20,000-capacity Ball Arena on Sept. 25.
They will follow a similar step-up pattern in Los Angeles from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 (Troubadour, The Wiltern, The Greek Theatre, The Forum), Chicago from Oct. 12 to 16 (Bottom Lounge, House of Blues, Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, United Center), Boston from Oct. 18 to 23 (Paradise Rock Club, House of Blues, Agganis Arena, TD Garden) and Atlanta from Nov. 2 to 8 (Center Stage, Tabernacle, Coca-Cola Roxy, State Farm Arena), as well as their hometown of Columbus, Ohio, where they will rock the Nationwide Arena on Oct. 29 and 30.
The tour will continue in London from June 21 to 25, 2022, with dates at the Camden Assembly, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, O2 Academy Brixton and The SSE Arena Wembley, as well as some not-yet-announced dates in Mexico City. “Wow. We’re playing shows again. I couldn’t visualize taking another break like we did before Trench, but then we were forced to,” drummer Josh Dun said in a statement. “Live shows coming back is something I think we’ve all really been waiting for, and we can’t wait to see you again soon.”
The duo, fronted by singer/guitarist/bassist/ukulelist Tyler Joseph, will be joined by a full band for the first time ever on the upcoming tour. After performing with the expanded lineup on their S&I livestream and at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, in an interview with Billboard last month, Joseph explained why he and Dun decided to share the stage with other performers after more than a decade of going it alone together.
“The truth is Twenty One Pilots as a band will always be Josh and Tyler,” Joseph said. “It will always be that, [but] there are moments for me as a frontman when we add different players at different moments for me to really lead that moment. It frees me up to really grab the moment by the horns and really lead that group or that crowd.”
He said the addition of Skyler Acord (bass), MuteMath’s Todd Gummerman (keyboard/guitar), Paul Meany (keyboard/livestream musical director), Dan Geraghty (guitar), frequent collaborator and Misterwives trumpet player Jesse Blum, as well as backup singers Kenyon Dixon and Danielle Withers for the BBMA’s was “so fun” and perhaps a hint of what’s to come.
“That was the first time we’d played in front of a crowd in over a year. Even though it was an ‘awards show crowd,’ it was a crowd of people cheering. Man, what a cool experience,” he said. “Just to be in front of those 600 people was such an ‘Oh, this is why we love playing live music!’ As far as the additional players and different guys helping us bring the songs to life, I feel like some of these songs I’ve written on this record really warrant having a guy on a guitar or having a guy really ripping it on bass guitar and some other utility stuff.”
Joseph said that for the way the pair plan to present the songs on the S&I album cycle, “it makes sense to have these guys support.” Don’t worry, though. 21P is still, and will always be, Josh and Tyler: “It’s not going to change the band. It will be just us at the beginning then we’ll bring them on for certain songs at certain moments to bring that energy, but then it’s us again.”
