Billie Eilish has teamed with YouTube for “Infinite Bad Guy,” which is described as the world’s first never-ending music video, and is comprised of the thousands of fan versions of the clip. (Eilish’s “Bad Guy” video recently joined the one billion views club.)

Created by YouTube and Google Creative Lab, “Infinite Bad Guy” was created using machine learning to combine thousands of covers, “seamlessly aligning them in endless combinations, creating a music video that’s different every time you watch it,” according to a release describing the project.

“As a team that loves working with really cutting edge technology ideas, being able to apply these ideas at the scale of YouTube, and get to work with such a rich and creative group of content is really unique,” said Google Creative Lab producer Jay Chen in a statement about the endlessly entertaining visual. “This project is a loving monument to YouTube fan culture, in all its diverse and wonderful glory. With billions of combinations, every viewing is unique and we can’t wait for you to play it.”

The mind-bending experiment puts the user in the driver’s seat, allowing them to choose from dozens of variations, from electronic to acoustic, string quartet, parody, woodwind, lute mode, folk, flute, choir, classical, violin, piano, harp, ballet, drag, belly dance, animation, ASMR, dance, dog and lip sync, pulling together a total of 15,000 clips that add up to 10.5 million seconds and counting.

“To create this experience, Google Creative Lab had to perfectly align the audio from thousands of videos with different tempos, instruments, keys, and styles. Conventional algorithms couldn’t do the trick alone, so we turned to machine learning,” according to a description of the project on the YouTube Blog. “For videos that deviated from the original track — like acoustic or a cappella versions — we built a neural network that could predict matches between covers and the original. With this data, we were able to line up all kinds of different covers, and switch seamlessly between them.”

Every play is unique, and according to YouTube, watching every combination would take at least 1.46 x 10^100 years, or longer than the entire lifespan of the universe. So good luck. Duh.

Eilish performed a visually stunning premiere live performance of her new single, “Therefore I Am,” at Sunday night’s (Nov. 22) 2020 American Music Awards.
