Sabrina Carpenter’s path to being a Grammy-nominated pop artist was far from quick, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been rewarding.

In a recent interview with People published on Wednesday (Jan. 8), the 25-year-old pop star discussed the lengthy journey she experienced before receiving recognition from the Recording Academy, which this year nominated her for Best New Artist, even though she’s been in the industry for over a decade. “I’ve always been true to myself and believed in my work since I was young,” she shared with the magazine.

She continued, “I’ve realized that it’s always been about the small baby steps that you take over time to get you to this point. I don’t think I have fully reflected yet, as I’m also trying to be present in the moment.”

“I’m just happy to see my songs connect with so many people from all walks of life,” Carpenter added. “That’s why I love to write songs.”

Carpenter is nominated for six Grammy awards in total, including Best New Artist, ahead of the ceremony in February. The Girl Meets World star will also compete for Song of the Year with her Billboard Hot 100 hit “Please Please Please,” Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for the popular track “Espresso,” and Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for her chart-topping LP Short n’ Sweet.

When Grammy nominations were first announced in November, Carpenter, who has released six albums since 2015, humorously commented on the irony of being considered a “new” artist in 2025. “I don’t know how that’s possible,” she laughed in an Instagram video reacting to the nomination. “I’m the best old artist. S—t, I’ve been here.”

“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t dreamt about this day my whole life,” she wrote in the caption at the time. “So I am filled with gratitude.”
