If you’ve had a chance to check out Yungblud live, you know that the British singer leaves it all on the stage. But even when he’s not tearing through one of his originals, the “11 Minutes” singer brings the fire.
Case in point: he visited the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge this week and tore off a mesmerizing triple-cover that included rocked-up version of Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’ “Señorita,” Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” and Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps.”
Wearing a black vinyl car coat over a black t-shit and red shorts with white shades propped on his head, Yungblud starts the performance mostly a cappella, crooning the hook to the Cabello/Mendes jam with light electric guitar backing before his drummer kicks in with a rocking beat and the guitarist adds some trippy effects to the mix. Flipping the song into a almost punk rock jam, ‘Blud then adds a string section at the one-minute mark as the coverfest slips into Winehouse’s iconic 2006 breakthrough hit, augmented by a thudding Led Zeppelin-style rhythm track and scratchy strings.
Things then settle down as plunked strings and a rising beat cascade into a frenzied, screaming take on Scott’s 2016 song before the whole things bull-rushes to an end with another skip through Winehouse and a hard, cracked vocal landing on “Señorita.”
