Mariah Carey took to social media on Thursday (April 9) to celebrate the 15th anniversary of her smash comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi with an impromptu rendition of fan-favorite deep cut “Your Girl.”
“Throwing it back with one of my favorite album cuts from the Mimi album – YOUR GIRL! Hope everybody is staying safe,” the superstar captioned the video using the hashtag #TEOMAnniversary.
Clad in a blue kimono-style robe emblazoned with peacocks, Carey delivers vocals fit for the gods as she belts out the track a capella. “See I used to be so shy/ Sit at home and fantasize/ I should be your girl/ I ain’t wastin’ no more time/ ‘Cause I’ve got to make you mine,” she sings as she riffs through the melody with her trademark melisma.
Earlier this week, Mimi kicked off her Emancipation celebration with another a capella video of the LP’s chronically underrated lead single “It’s Like That.”
Released on April 12, 2005, The Emancipation of Mimi would eventually go on to become the best-selling album of the year in the U.S., spawning now-classic singles “We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off” and “Don’t Forget About Us,” earning the star 10 Grammy nominations across two separate years and reestablishing her dominance on the charts after the commercial disappointments of 2001’s Glitter and 2002’s Charmbracelet.
