Tove Lo returned with the empowering new single “Glad He’s Gone” on Friday (May 31). It comes from the singer’s forthcoming album, Sunshine Kitty, set to be released via Island Records.
“We’ve all been on both sides of the breakup pep talk with our friends,” Tove shared in a press release. “And we all know how good it feels to get your partner in crime back when they finally leave that idiot behind.”
In the infectious, summer-ready track, co-produced by Shellback and Struts, the multi-platinum Swedish artist sings to what sounds like her best friend: “Bitch, I love you, he never loved you/ he never saw the pretty things in you that I do.” It’s smart and full of wisdom but does not compromise the tongue-in-cheek lyricism that makes Tove so lovable.
Sunshine Kitty marks a new chapter for Tove. The title is “a play on pussy power, but it’s a happy, positive way of seeing it,” she stated. “It ties in with the lynx. This cartoon cat (featured on the artwork) is an extension of me and part of the new music. She’s super cute, but she does stupid shit like getting in fights and getting fucked up. It’s how I feel the album sounds.”
Katy Perry also gave a shout-out to Tove in a tweet on Thursday, calling her a “talented goddess” alongside Miley Cyrus, Cardi B and other artists with New Music Friday releases.
