Move over “Dance Monkey,” Tones’ “Bad Child” has busted out.
Tones And I, one of the hottest breakthrough artists of the past year, returns with “Bad Child” and “Can’t Be Happy All The Time,” her first new cuts since 2019’s The Kids Are Coming EP.
“Bad Child,” with its punchy keys and fat bass, all sitting under Tones’ powerhouse vocals, has a pinch of the ingredients to her smash hit “Dance Monkey.” On it, she sings: “Feeling like I always do the wrong things/Telling all their friends that I’m the bad kid/Now I’m on my own, I lost my magic/Dealing with your bullshit now I’m over it.”
“Can’t Be Happy All The Time” is in a different, slower lane, its production stripped back to showcase Tones’ range.
Earlier this week, the former-busker-turned-global chart star came in at No. 6 on the IFPI’s Top 10 Global Digital Singles 2019 with “Dance Monkey,” a song that led the charts in 30 countries and smashed records on both ends of the globe.
The song secured a record-setting 24 weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, and 11 weeks at No. 1 in the U.K., an all-time best for a solo female artist.
Tones (real name Toni Watson) has road-tested the new tracks on her 2020 North America and Europe dates.
