Wex & Alex – Maroon 5
Maroon 5 got its third No. 2 hit on the Hot 100, thanks to “Girls Like You” featuring Cardi B, and of course, fans of all genders around the world who can’t stop listening to the song’s infectious radio-pop hook. The song’s success may also have something to do with a star-studded music video featuring everyone from Sarah Silverman to Millie Bobby Brown, Ellen DeGeneres and more.
It’s an innocuous enough ditty full of sometimes romance with a healthy amount of modern distance. It’s really all about the beat, almost scientifically engineered to hang around in your head for hours after just a few notes. When you’ve got a chorus this catchy, you inspire more than a few cool remixes, and here, we give you our favorites.
Maroon 5 – “Girls Like You” (St. Vincent Remix)
Nope, you’re not misreading this. St. Vincent, the incredible rock star guitarist, made a freakin’ Maroon 5 remix. It’s moody and atmospheric, a little trippy and a little folksy. it’s not quite like anything you’ve heard, and it’s got one helluva walking bassline under its electronic textures. Of course, there’s some great guitar work, but she lets the chopped-up vocals take lead. More St. Vincent remixes, please.
Maroon 5 – “Girls Like You” (TOKiMONSTA Remix)
There aren’t many girls like TOKiMONSTA. The Los Angeles-based beat maker straddles the experimental indie world and the cool-kid main line with dexterous ease. She can play melodic and sweet, or heady and futuristic, and she does a little bit of both with this jazzy reinterpretation. Enjoy every layer of this one.
Maroon 5 – “Girls Like You” (Cray Remix)
Another fierce lady of the LA scene, Cray puts her signature trap-pop treatment to the Maroon 5 favorite. A downtempo energy gives a twisted air to the love jam, bringing out the shadows in the song’s on-and-off again lyrical storyline. It’s a mysterious and mischievous take. You definitely know a girl like this who can get down to this beat.
Maroon 5 – “Girls Like You” (ZYN Remix)
What would some shiny synths and computerized melodies do to the summer song? ZYN’s remix bumps up the electronic element but keeps the pop perk intact. The accentuated acoustic guitar squeaks play heavy to counterbalance the bleep-bloops.
Maroon 5 – “Girls Like You” (Raspo Remix)
We finish the roundup with an extra bouncy take from Raspo. Hand claps and a sped up tempo come through to give this remix easy likeability, and the vocal shop chorus over a punchy bass line is both groovy and adorable. It’s a sunshine-y take without being over-the-top.
