After getting her start on Musical.ly in 2015, Loren Gray signed to Virgin Records in March 2018, and has since released a handful of pop jams including the snappy “Options” and the feisty “Lie Like That.” Next up for the 17-year-old is a collaboration with buzzy rapper Saweetie titled “Can’t Do It,” bringing even more girl power to Gray’s already confidence-filled career.
Though Gray has made sure her music and her image is empowering, her Takeover Tuesday playlist is a reminder that she’s only human: All 18 tracks are about missing someone. “Whether it’s a friendship that’s drifted or a relationship that fell apart, we can all connect in some way to the feeling of missing someone you once loved,” Gray says in a statement.
Many Gray’s picks are pop songs with a somber feel, from Drake’s throbbing Take Care cut “Marvins Room” to Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys heartbreaker “Stay.” But there’s also several upbeat lovelorn tracks on her playlist, like Kehlani’s vibey Ty Dolla $ign collaboration “Nights Like This,” Lauv and Troye Sivan’s bouncy “I’m So Tired,” and Shawn Mendes’ super-catchy new release “If I Can’t Have You.”
Gray also shouts out rising stars like herself, adding Tyla Yaweh’s “They Ain’t You,” Ali Gatie’s “Moonlight” and Hrvy’s “I Miss Myself” to the playlist as well. Needless to say, if you’re longing for an old friend or past love, you’ll likely find solace in at least one of these tunes.
