Jimmy Kimmel Live! is broadcasting from Brooklyn all week, so it made perfect sense that on Tuesday night (Oct. 16) St Vincent made sure to pay her tributes to the city. The indie rock guru exuded a unique glow while performing a stripped-back version of “New York” accompanied by piano.

With her hair slicked back, the 36-year-old serenaded the audience with her silky voice — delivering chilling vocals and gentle soundscapes that are signature of her music. Offering a bare-boned rendition of the track, she rolled into the heartfelt lyrics, “I have lost a hero/ I have lost a friend/ But for you, darling/ I’d do it all again/ New York isn’t New York/ Without you, love.”

The singer began her performance behind curtains, singing directly to the camera, and as she leaned into the chorus the curtains went up revealing her on stage alongside pianist Thomas Bartlett in front of a giant neon Brooklyn sign.

Marking the one year anniversary of her 2017 album Masseduction, St. Vincent recently released an unplugged version of the record, titled MassEducation. A re-imagined compilation of her own work, MassEducation offers another side of the 2017 album — laying bare the uniqueness of her song craft, all accentuated by Bartlett on piano.
