Shawn Mendes recently rolled into the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge to lay down a mellow cover of Frank Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and his own “Wonder.”
The cover of Valli’s Grammy-nominated 1967 hit found Mendes turning the bouncy pop tune into a thoughtful, jazzy solo piano piece. The camera swirled around the singer while he played the gentle melody on an upright piano.
About halfway through, Mendes’ band kicked in, providing shimmering guitar, crashing cymbals and warm keys.
Mendes later returned to the piano for a mellow stroll through the thoughtful title track of his fourth album Wonder, which is due on Dec. 4.
The emotional arrangement mostly featured Mendes on piano, with the occasional swell of cymbals, bluesy guitar and bass-y synth notes.
