Shawn Mendes and the Shawn Mendes Foundation launched Global Citizen Academy today (July 14) in partnership with Global Citizen Year, a first-of-its-kind leadership experience for high school graduates learning about their social impact in the world.

The new initiative offers accredited courses with the Minerva Project’s virtual learning platform while focusing the scope of the curriculum and high-profile guest speakers on social issues, such as racial justice, climate change and human rights. Mendes’ eponymous foundation will also provide $250,000 worth of need-based scholarships for applicants.

“Our world needs young leaders now more than ever,” Mendes said in the press release. “It’s been truly inspiring to watch so many young activists use their voices. By working with Global Citizen Academy, my hope is that we can empower many more young people around the world with the resources and tools they need to make an impact.”

The Grammy award-nominated singer, who started his foundation in 2019 after talking with young activists on tour, will serve as the Global Youth Chair of the Academy. He’ll also recruit applicants for mentorship opportunities and the “Leadership In Action” guest-speaking series.

“In recent months many have called on Gen Z — and, specifically, this year’s high school graduates — to step up and lead. Some have called for a year of service, others have called for a national corps. But until now, no one has provided a clear and tangible way to do it,” said Abby Falik, Global Citizen Year founder & CEO, in the release. “Today, we’re thrilled to partner with Shawn and his Foundation to launch Global Citizen Academy: a powerful new pathway for young people who are ready to get in the arena, level up and lead.. To anyone around the world who is inspired by Shawn’s activism and leadership, I hope you’ll join us. This is your chance to become the kind of leader our world needs now.”

The Global Citizen Academy will accept applications until July 30.
