Scarypoolparty shared some insights from his self-reflections during his benevolent Billboard Live At-Home performance Tuesday (June 16) that raised money for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
In between songs like “Out Loud” and “Millennial Love,” Scarypoolparty (real name Alejandro Aranda) spoke out about the grim current times without specifically referring to the coronavirus pandemic or the killings of multiple Black Americans.
“I feel like for myself, there’s a lot of self-reflection happening within my own life to figure out what I need to be focused on and how to help my community better and help my friends and family and to check up on people that I love,” he said. “I think this time is really interesting for that because it’s taking a lot of us to really analyze what’s going on and to understand that we’re all here for each other. We have to be…. In this time, we’re taking big steps in our lives to understand that we need to stand up for what we believe.”
The American Idol alum noted how his role as an artist is “a small part,” but he’s expanded his altruistic objective by writing songs for his friends and what they’re going through. He ended his acoustic set with “10 Years,” a melancholic yet meaningful breakup anthem not for himself but for one of his close friends. “I wrote it for a friend of mine…. She ended a relationship and she didn’t really know how to talk about it,” the 25-year-old artist said. “I tend to write songs in a way that I’m always writing for friends, I’m always writing for people that I care about.”
