Sam Smith turned the lights down low on Tuesday night (March 16) for a moving performance of “Kids Again” from their third album, Love Goes. With their signature steaming mug of tea and flower arrangement on a table, Smith crooned the wistful ballad backed by a full, distanced band, including a trio of soulful back-up singers.
With the stage subtly lit by towers of purple lights, Smith swayed as they sang the longing chorus, “Do you even think about it?/ The way that we changed the world/ And don’t it make you sad/ That we’ll never be kids again?/ No, we’ll never be kids again.” After a bluesy slide guitar break, Smith brought it all back home with an a cappella coda, “No, we’ll never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever…”
Smith has kept a low profile since their surprise Christmas single, “The Lighthouse Keeper,” dropped in November. The kind of blue orchestral ballad written by Smith with producer Labrinth was a throwback to a Bing Crosby-style holiday song, with an emotional story at its center about a long-sought reunion at Christmastime.
