Sabrina Carpenter’s first performance at the Grammys took a humorous turn with a comedic routine. The 25-year-old former Disney star performed her Grammy-nominated tracks “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on February 2, featuring some planned mishaps, like missing the spotlight and colliding with dancers.
The performance kicked off with a Broadway-style version of “Espresso,” which later won the Grammy for Pop Solo Performance. Carpenter honored Goldie Hawn by referencing her 1978 song “Nobody Does It Like Me,” complete with an elevator on stage and peering over the edge. She also “lost” her baton and swapped her tuxedo for a more seductive look, while the background singers joked, “Somebody’s getting fired.”
The fun didn’t end there. After the first verse of “Espresso,” Carpenter transitioned into the second verse of “Please Please Please,” set in a house setting. While everything seemed fine at first, things quickly went awry when the lights flickered, the back wall collapsed, and Carpenter jumped into her dancer’s arms, laughing and screaming, while accidentally hitting another dancer in the face. There were additional amusing technical glitches with the dancers and the performance itself.
Sabrina Carpenter is known for her bold performances at award shows. Last year, she made headlines at the VMAs after kissing a female alien on stage, drawing inspiration from Madonna and Marilyn Monroe on the red carpet. She is currently on her Short n’ Sweet Tour in support of her Grammy-winning album. The tour will resume in Ireland on March 3 after completing the North American leg late last year.
The “Taste” singer received six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. She won two awards: Best Pop Solo Performance for “Espresso” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Short n’ Sweet. This marked her first time being nominated for a Grammy, and she certainly left a lasting impression with her unforgettable performance. To celebrate her wins, she will release a deluxe edition of her album on Valentine’s Day, which will include a remix of “Please Please Please” featuring Dolly Parton.
