“Don’t drive yourself insane” trying to figure out what she’s saying.
Sabrina Carpenter has surprise-released a new single that has raised a lot of questions.
The singer/actress, best known for her run on Girl Meets World and last year’s The Disney Family Singalong: Volume 2, dropped the provocative song “Skin” on Friday morning (Jan. 22), with lyrics that begged more questions than they answered.
The slow-boiling pop ballad opens with what sounds like a very pointed kiss-off with the lines, “Maybe we could have been friends/ If I met you in another life/ Maybe we could pretend/ There’s no gravity in the words we write/ Maybe you didn’t mean it/ Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme,” before busting into the even more pointed chorus.
“You can try/ To get under my, under my, under my skin/ While he’s on mine/ Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin/ I wish you knew that even you/ Can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in,” she sings.
Later, Carpenter advises, “Don’t drive yourself insane/ It won’t always be this way.”
“Skin” also marks Carpenter’s debut with Island Records, and follows her 2019 album Singular: Act II.
