Priyanka Chopra opened up about what it was like to learn all about her husband Nick Jonas’ diabetes diagnosis on The View.

“Initially, when we first got married, I couldn’t wrap my brain around the fact that he knew when his sugar dropped, even while he was sleeping,” Chopra said.

But for the Quantico actress, she was more restless about it and would even “wake up in the middle of the night to just check if everything’s OK for a really long time.”

Jonas has been living with Type 1 diabetes since he was 13, after he lost a considerable amount of weight and had an unquenchable thirst for sugary soda — all common signs of the disease. One of his brothers recommended he visit the doctor, who diagnosed him with Type 1 diabetes because his body creates very little to no insulin naturally. Jonas, now 27, uses an insulin pump to take medication regularly to maintain his health.

His wife noted how regulated he is about his diabetes and how it doesn’t hinder his ability to live a full life.

“He has been taking care of his diabetes since he was so young that he just has a crazy discipline about it,” she told The View hosts. “He knows exactly what to do, when to do, and he lives the biggest life possible. He has not restricted himself from anything — he plays sports, he’s touring. He lives an incredible life, and it’s so inspiring to see.”

She spoke about her husband’s inspiring nonprofit organization, Beyond Type 1, and how “he wanted to show people that even if you have Type 1 diabetes, it doesn’t mean your life has to be different. You can live it to the fullest.”

In a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado, Jonas opened up about his initial fears about the disease and how close he was to being in a coma. “Like a day away, if I hadn’t gone to the hospital,” he revealed at the time. “I kept asking my parents — am I going to be OK? I was just so concerned that it was going to limit my ability to do all the things I wanted to do. I was very scared — it’s a big life change.”
