Nick Jonas dropped the second single from his upcoming Spaceman album on Thursday (March 4), the simmering “This Is Heaven.” He performed the midtempo ballad — co-written by Jonas, Greg Kurstin (who also produced) and Maureen “Mozella” McDonald — while doing double-duty hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live Feb. 28, and in an interview with SiriusXM Hits 1’s The Morning Mash Up on Thursday (March 4), he explained the heartache that went into the lyrics.
“‘This Is Heaven’ in general, basically touches on that feeling of being reunited with your personal, you know … for context Pri [Priyanka Chopra Jonas] went to a shoot in Germany for a couple months while I was in L.A. working on the album,” he said of his wife, who spent time last year overseas shooting The Matrix 4 with Keanu Reeves. “And also just, I was in L.A. working on other things and, and so that distance really settled in. And then when we finally were kind of back together after this time apart, I went back and wrote this song. … It was just meant to encapsulate kind of that euphoric feeling of being with your person. And, you know, for me, it’s obviously a romantic thing.”
That longing and joy of their reunion can be heard on the song’s urgent chorus, on which Nick sings, “This is heavеn/ And I don’t know how this could get much better (Yeah)/ Than you and me, here right now/ This is heaven/ And every time I touch you, it gets better/ I’m on my knees, I can’t stop now/ This is heaven, this is heaven, yeah, this is heaven.”
Jonas will be staying very busy in the lead-up to the March 12 release of Spaceman, appearing as a coach on The Voice a well as co-starring in the upcoming Lionsgate drama Chaos Walking, which drops on Friday (March 5). He will also join Lily Collins, Rosario Dawson, Aubrey Plaza, Pedro Pascal and more for the audio mystery thriller series Calls, which is premiere on Apple TV+ on March 19.
The 11-song release is his first solo album in nearly seven years since his 2014 sophomore eponymous album, which reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200.
