Miley Cyrus crammed into a tiny bedroom for her emotional three-song NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert on Thursday (Jan. 28), which included two originals and a moving cover of a Mazzy Star classic.

The singer, used to putting on a big spectacle, got small for the three-song set, in which she squeezed into a set made to look like a teenager’s pink bedroom, complete with scrawled drawings on the wall and miniature furniture.

Dressed in a fuzzy cowboy hat, shades, long black animal-print coat with clashing animal-print pants and vest, Miley looked like a giant in the pocket space, opening with another of her signature Miley-fied covers, a slow-burn take on the already molasses-like 1994 Mazzy Star ballad “Fade Into You.” Seated on the bed, Cyrus’ quavering, dusky voice wrapped around the song’s lyrics about trying — and failing — to connect with a lover, leaning back as she sang, “I look to you to see the truth/ You live your life, you go in shadows/ You’ll come apart and you’ll go black.”

Miley ditched the hat, jacket and glasses, but stayed seated on the bed for the clear-eyed “Golden G-String” from her recent album Plastic Hearts, looking like she was ready to burst out of her self-imposed box as she sang about busting down the walls of the old-boy network and just being herself. Down on her knees as she wailed “That’s just the world we’re livin’ in,” the singer channeled one of her idols — and a Plastic Hearts collaborator — punk godmother Joan Jett, with her shaggy mullet, dark eye makeup and flexed biceps.

As the camera zoomed out and Miley crawled from the mini-set and her masked, distanced band came into view around her, she stayed in a crouch for the simmering 1980s-style Hearts ballad “Prisoner.”

Miley is gearing up to performer at the TikTok Tailgate pre-show event during which she’ll rock the stage for the 7,500 health care heroes who the NFL invited to Super Bowl LV. “I’ll be there for TIKTOK TAILGATE!!! I can’t wait to put on a show for the NFL’s honored guests before the game…. Health care workers from Tampa and around the country!” Miley wrote in a Jan. 24 Instagram. The TikTok Tailgate can be watched on Feb. 7 at 2:30 p.m. ET, either on TikTok or CBS.
