The Spice Girls spent last week celebrating the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough 1996 single “Wannabe.” But apparently the friendship never ends, since Mel B (“Scary Spice”) teased in an Instagram post that we might be seeing more of the now-quartet in the future.
“Ahhh finally peeps!!!! It’s been a very VERY emotional day,but we WILL be back and that’s my”scary”promise to you all #spice #girls #forever #25 #years #watchthisspace #loyalty #trust #thankful,” Mel wrote in a post that included a video ticking off the single’s accomplishments — which include the title of all-time best-selling single by a girl group — alongside testimonials from superfans about how the British girl group impacted their lives. At press time a spokesperson for the group, which originally also included Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham, could not be reached for additional comment on future plans.
Though Beckham has sat out recent reunions, she posted on her Insta story last week that she couldn’t believe it’s been 25 years since the song dropped, while member Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton confessed she was feeling emotional about the quarter-century celebration; the group also includes Melanie C.
“Wannabe” spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was ranked the 10th biggest Hot 100 hit on the year-end chart in 1997. Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice, shared a couple throwback photos in celebration of the song that “changed the lives of five girls from Britain.”
“It’s a special bond that continues to stand the test of time,” she wrote in her caption. “I’m so proud of everything we have achieved together, girls. BIG thank you to our amazing fans from all over the world for your support and loyalty.” The group, which originally went on hiatus in Dec. 2000, reunited for a tour in late 2007-2008, then again for the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony and the 2019 Spice World Tour.
