A Area singer-songwriter Marc E. Bassy announced Thursday (July 11) the creation of his own independent label New Gold Medal, and he’s starting his latest venture as a dual solo artist and label head with a track that could serve as a mission statement.

On “Die Hard,” the vocalist takes some leading-man inspiration from the titular 1988 Bruce Willis blockbuster on a spirited diatribe about confronting change and leaving the past behind for the new. The song reflects Bassy’s personal journey of breaking away from his major-label deal with Republic Records in 2018 in order to make way for his own endeavor with New Gold Medal.

The label was formed by Bassy along with his manager, Robert “Fess” Stewart, and his team.

“Being an artist at Republic was a great experience. My team there was incredible, they fully supported me the whole way and helped to jump start my career as a solo artist,” Bassy tells Billboard. “After a few years there, I decided it was time to go down a new path and take ownership of the music. Soon after, I did something I’ve always wanted to do and launched my own independent label New Gold Medal.”

“Die Hard” follows “Save Me,” Bassy’s debut on the label last month and his first release since 2018’s Postmodern Depression EP. The song capitalizes on his perfected blend of funk and R&B and adds a deep sensuality that promises a dynamic and adventurous sound for Bassy going forward into his next chapter.
