Madonna has expressed her disapproval of Donald Trump’s administration for “dismantling all the freedoms we have been fighting for.”
In a recent post on X, the pop icon shared a selfie with the message: “It’s so sad to watch our new Government slowly dismantling all the Freedoms we have been fighting for and WON over the years.” She added a Pride flag and a broken heart emoji, and concluded by urging her followers: “Don’t give up the Fight!”
During the first week of Trump’s second term as president, he signed executive orders aimed at eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion roles in government agencies; reversing measures that protected against discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation; and banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. Additionally, his administration decided to recognize only two genders — male and female — on official documents like passports.
This is not the first time Madonna, a long-time advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, has criticized Trump. After his 2016 election victory, she delivered a spontaneous speech at the Women’s March in Washington, declaring: “Welcome to the revolution of love, to the rebellion, to our refusal as women to accept this new age of tyranny, where not just women are in danger but all marginalized people, where being uniquely different right now might truly be considered a crime. It took this horrific moment of darkness to wake us the fuck up.”
Other pop stars have also spoken out against Trump in response to his executive actions. In an Elle magazine interview published Tuesday, Lady Gaga stated: “I am one of many people that supports [the LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized] communities. And we’re not going down without a fight. We will stick together. It’s going to be hard but I’m up for it. We’re up for it. And I just want everyone to know how deeply they’re loved and not invisible.”
Selena Gomez also posted and then deleted an emotional video on Instagram Monday, where she tearfully reacted to the mass deportations following Trump’s presidency. “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry,” Gomez said in the video. “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
