So you love techno music, but you’re looking to go a shade darker. Maceo Plex is with you. His Mutant EP series explores what he sees as a deeper, more intellectual side of the understated genre. He kicked off the sonic exploration with Mutant 1, released on his friend Jennifer Cardini’s label Correspondant in May. Now, he continues the journey with a two-track EP called Mutant 2, but this time, he’s releasing on his own new label.
Ellum Black is a subset of the American DJ and producer’s Ellum label. It will be a home for all things dark in the techno world. Mutant 2 features an A-Side collaboration with Dallas-based duo Paradigm Shift called “Mutant Pulse.” It’s delicate and rhythmic, haunting and sensual. It’s certainly shrouded in an inviting kind of darkness. “Mutant Pulse” serves as a lead single for the full release, scheduled for July 27, labeled Ellum Black Friday. It will be paired with solo B-side “Mutant Radio.”
Plex won’t be sitting on his laurels, either. Ellum Black scheduled a second release from Ellum friend Architectural with a three-track EP titled A Girl With No Friends EP. That will see full release Friday, Aug. 17. For now, you can get ready for the darkness with “Mutant Pulse” below.
