The superstar video summit we’ve been waiting for was everything, plus more. The video for Lady Gaga’s “Rain On Me” collaboration with Ariana Grande exploded into our feeds on Friday afternoon (May 22) and it was a deluge of new classic Gaga looks and post-apocalyptic dance mania.
With Gaga modeling a smeared yellow leather body suit and Grande in a shiny black metallic miniskirt with butterfly wings, the clip is a choreo showdown in a dreary, Blade Runner-like arena of the future, with each woman surrounded by their respective legion of dancers.
Oh, and Gaga gets stabbed in the leg at some point after a storm of knives pour from the sky and she spends quite a bit of time behind a pane of glass nearly drowning in a downpour. There are, of course, a number of costume changes as well, with each woman cycling through a series of sure-to-be meme’d iconic looks in the mini-epic directed by Sin City auteur Robert Rodriguez.
The song will appear on Gaga’s upcoming six studio album, Chromatica, which is due out next Friday (May 29). The clip dropped just hours after the song debuted, following a string of adoring tweets from the women, who both gushed about how lucky they felt to work together. In a testament to their new BFF status, the visual ends with Gaga and Grande hugging and smiling into the camera.
