Kelly Clarkson closed out this week’s batch of Kellyoke covers with her tearjerker take on Phil Collins’ “I Wish It Would Rain Down.”
The No. 3 charting 1990 power ballad from the Genesis singer’s smash 1989 fourth solo album, …But Seriously that features pal Eric Clapton on guitar is like buttah in Clarkson’s hands.
With a funereal beat and graphics of a downpour on the screens behind her, Clarkson grabbed the mic stand as she leaned into the song’s chorus, wailing, “‘Cause I know, I know I never meant to cause you no pain/And I realize I let you down/ But I know in my heart of heart of hearts/ I know I’m never gonna hold you again,” as the song built to a keening series of high note and the signature guitar break.
The theme of this week’s Kellyoke segments appeared to be romance and love, as Kelly took on a series of weepers, including the iconic “Unchained Melody,” as well as H.E.R.’s “Hard Place” and a sassy strut through Tanya Tucker’s “It’s a Little Too Late.”
