Kelly Clarkson kicked off the Wednesday (Jan. 6) edition of The Kelly Clarkson Show with a sparkling rendition of Selena Gomez’s “Rare.”
“It feels like you don’t care/ Why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?/ I’m always there/ You don’t do the same for me/ That’s not fair/ I don’t have it all/ I’m not claiming to/ But I know that I’m special, yeah/ And I’ll bet there’s somebody else out there/ To tell me I’m rare/ Make me feel rare,” she sang on the track’s self-assured chorus with some help from her house band, Y’all.
The Voice coach’s faithful take on the track arrives almost exactly one year since Gomez dropped her third solo album, also titled Rare, on Jan. 10, 2019. Led by No. 1 hit “Lose You to Love Me,” the LP earned the pop star her third consecutive chart-topper on the Billboard 200. The title track, meanwhile, was released as the album’s third single, and eventually peaked at No. 30.
Clarkson, meanwhile, remains hard at work on her upcoming ninth studio album, which she often references in conversation on her talk show. The as-yet-untitled studio set will be the superstar’s first in the wake of her split with husband and manager Brandon Blackstock, after filing for divorce back in June amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Since returning from her holiday break, Clarkson has run the gamut with her Kellyoke picks, covering the likes of Coldplay (“Princess of China”), Chicago (“Hard to Say I’m Sorry”) and Madonna (“Borderline”) in the first week of 2021.
