After flashing an impressive flower-shaped ring on Instagram after Valentine’s Day, Katy Perry finally dished about the details of her engagement to actor and longtime love Orlando Bloom on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night (Feb. 25). And the wait was worth it, since, as Perry told Kimmel, Bloom “did so well” with his elaborate proposal.
She said the pair went to dinner, after which Perry thought they were going to see an art show. “But we pulled up to a helicopter,” a surprise Kimmel said sounded a lot like one of the stunts frequently pulled on his favorite show, The Bachelor. “I’m glad I don’t have to go on that show now!” Perry laughed.
Dressed in a glittery gold gown that she said made her look like an Oscar, Perry explained that she and Bloom actually bonded over an In-N-Out Burger three years ago after the Golden Globes, when Bloom snatched a burger off her table. “I was like, ‘wait, who?… oh, you’re so hot, fine, take it!'”
Flash forward to the engagement — Katy said she “voice my opinion” on the ring — including a champagne toast in the helicopter. “The box was in his pocket and he had written down everything he wanted to say in a note to divert — he was gonna pull it out while I was reading it,” she said. But, as with all good engagement stories, something went terribly wrong and as Bloom was trying to pull the box out of the too-small pocket of his jacket, his elbow hit the champagne bottle, which went flying and shattered everywhere.
“And I’m like, ‘No, I’m just reading the note. I know you’re not doing anything,'” she said. The eventually landed on a rooftop and Bloom nailed the dismount. “My whole family was there, and all my friends… he did so well.”
The American Idol judge also talked about taking the center spot on the show between Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, with Kimmel wondering if that made her the lead judge on the rebooted singing competition show. “I definitely am a team player… I’m probably the more stern, straight-to-the-point Simon Cowell with tits,” she said, noting that on the previous night’s Oscars, two of the four musical performers were Idol alum, Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson. “I feel like that’s a really good sign: American Idol, you’re going places!”
After years of on-and-off dating, the couple got engaged on the most romantic of days, sharing a picture on their social feeds of a gorgeous, flower-shaped ring, which Perry captioned “Full bloom.” Bloom’s caption for the identical romantic pic was, “Lifetimes.”
Bloom, 42, and Perry, 34, first started dating back in early 2016 and were pictured together several times over the next year, before reportedly breaking up in Feb. 2017, only to seemingly get back together later that year. Both have been married before; Perry to comedian Russell Brand in 2010, which lasted one year, with Bloom marrying actress Miranda Kerr in 2010, splitting three years later.
