Katy Perry Admits She Used to Pretend to Be Zooey Deschanel to Get Into Clubs

Katy Perry really appreciates that actress Zooey Deschanel was up for impersonating her in the quirky, out-of-this-world video for “Not the End of the World.” In the clip that dropped on Monday (Dec.2 1), a pair of blue aliens tasked with saving the pop star from Earth’s impending demise accidentally zap KP lookalike Deschanel by mistake.

Funny story: The extraterrestrials aren’t the only ones prone to mixing up the two. As it turns out, back in the early 2000s, bouncers were easily duped as well. During an Instagram Live video on Monday night with the former New Girl star, Perry let it slip that back before she was an international pop icon, she used to pretend to be Deschanel in order to get into clubs.

“I have to admit something, Zooey,” said Perry, 36 in the Live video, during which the pair bonded about being moms and filming the music video several months ago during lockdown. “When I came to L.A., I was pretty much a nobody, and you were just getting so huge at that time — it was like Zooey Deschanel ran the world. … In that moment, I was so complimented to look like you.

“But I have to admit something to you on a Live: that when I first got to L.A., I went to the club a lot. And I wanted to get into the club and I had no money, I had no clout, I had nothing, and sometimes I would pose as you to get into the club.”

While Perry kind of felt bad about trading on the resemblance to the Almost Famous star in order to go clubbing, Deschanel, 40, said word got back to her about the pop star’s impersonation spree, and after some initial concerns, she was totally fine with it. “People would be like, ‘I saw you!’ ” Deschanel said with a laugh. “But I’m such a Goody Two-shoes and people kept going, ‘I saw you out! I made eye contact with you!’ And I was like, ‘No!’ And then everybody kept telling me about this girl Katy, Katy, who looks just like you,’ and I’m like, ‘Who is this Katy?'”

But when the pair finally met, Deschanel said she was “relieved” because Perry was “so pretty and I was like, ‘Oh thank God. She’s so pretty.’ You never know when people say you look like somebody what they’re gonna look like, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s gorgeous. Thank you — compliment.”

That was good news to Perry, because, she admitted, she used to get “pretty crunk in the club” back in her “wild child” late teens and early 20s. “I was turned up to 11 at the club,” said the mother of newborn baby girl with Orlando Bloom, Daisy Dove Bloom, about her younger years.

“I’m sorry if I misrepresented you. I wanted to say that now,” Perry said of her “Faux-ey” period, to which She & Him singer Deschanel responded, “It’s a compliment!”
