JJustin Bieber brought his latest hits live to fans for the People’s Choice Awards on Sunday (Nov. 15).

His set kicked off with the superstar singer sitting alone and dejected at a bus stop on an empty street as the opening strains of his most recent single, “Lonely,” began. Benny Blanco, his collaborator on the song about finding fame at a young age, sat off to the side playing the keyboard.

As the emotional song ended, a screen parted and neon crosses appeared around Bieber as he walked onto a stage to perform his gospel-tinged hit “Holy.” Chance the Rapper is featured on the tune with the 26-year-old star, but did not appear for the People’s Choice Awards, though the duo performed the song together on Saturday Night Live in October.

Bieber tied with Lady Gaga for the most nominations for this year’s ceremony with seven. Among the categories he received nods in were song of 2020, album of 2020, and music video of 2020. Ahead of his performance, he took home the award for male artist of 2020.

Demi Lovato hosted the ceremony, which was broadcast from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. With the number of cases of the coronavirus continuing to grow at alarming rates in the United States, the show was filmed with a remote audience, with members appearing on giant screens on stage alongside Lovato, as if in a huge virtual meeting. Celebrity presenters and winners were on hand to give and accept the awards.
