Actor and musician Josh Whitehouse has unveiled his new track “Before Christmas” from the upcoming Netflix holiday romance The Knight Before Christmas, premiering exclusively on Billboard Wednesday (Nov. 20).
In the film — out Thursday (Nov. 21) — Whitehouse stars opposite Vanessa Hudgens as Sir Cole, a 14th century knight sent by a magical sorceress to modern-day Ohio just in time for the holiday season. While there, he meets and falls in love with Hudgens’ Brooke, described as a “clever and kind science teacher” determined to help him return to his own time.
The actor’s original song — which he describes as being “about two strangers from completely different worlds and situations meeting and falling in love against the odds” — provides a perfect complement to the film’s romantic tale of star-crossed Christmastime lovers.
“I ran from my home/ Not a care in the world/ Rebelled to the throne/ I got lessons to learn/ I fled to the scene/ I stumbled upon you/ It seems like a dream/ I feel like it’s true,” Whitehouse croons over gently-strummed guitar and the steady march of sleigh bells.
“I wanted to write the song from Sir Cole’s perspective and explore what it is to fall in love with someone from another world or lifestyle,” Whitehouse tells Billboard. “Sometimes when I’m preparing for roles, I like to write songs in character to explore moods and emotions. Normally nobody hears them apart from me, but this time I was enjoying the outcome so much I felt compelled to share it and I am so glad that I did!”
In addition to “Before Christmas,” the actor recently released a pair of singles — “Astrologers” and “Lost & Found” — with his band More Like Trees in the lead-up to their debut studio album, Don’t Disturb the Garden. The LP is expected to be released in January 2020.
