John Mayer Returns to No. 1 on Adult Alternative Airplay Chart With ‘Last Train Home’

John Mayer leads Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart for the first time since 2009, as “Last Train Home” rolls to No. 1 on the ranking dated Aug. 21.

“Train” is Mayer’s seventh Adult Alternative Airplay No. 1. He logged his first six in the 2000s, starting with his breakthrough hit “No Such Thing” in 2001. His sixth, “Who Says,” ruled for five weeks in late 2009.

Between “Who Says” and “Train,” Mayer charted 10 Adult Alternative Airplay entries, with three – “Half of My Heart” in 2010, and “Shadow Days” and “Queen of California” in 2012 – hitting No. 2 highs.

Mayer ties for the fifth-most No. 1s on the chart, which began in 1996. Coldplay and U2 lead all acts with 13 apiece.

Concurrently, “Train” chugs 30-29 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 1.2 million audience impressions, up 3%, according to MRC Data. It’s Mayer’s highest rank on the survey, which began in 2009, exceeding the No. 34 peak of “Who Says” in 2010.

“Train” is the latest single from Sob Rock, Mayer’s eighth studio LP. It debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts dated July 31.
