John Lennon’s sons and Beatles mates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr honored the legend on Tuesday (Dec. 8), which marked the 40th anniversary of his death.

The iconic musician was fatally shot in front of his New York City apartment on the evening of Dec 8, 1980, by Mark David Chapman. He was 40.

“A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser! X love Paul,” McCartney wrote, along with a touching picture of the duo snapped by McCartney’s late wife, Linda.

Sean Ono Lennon did not share a message, but he did post a picture to Instagram of himself; his half-brother, Julian; and his father and mother, Yoko Ono.

“Tuesday, 8 December 1980 we all had to say goodbye to John peace and love John. I’m asking every music radio station in the world sometime today play ‘Strawberry Fields Forever.’ Peace and love,” wrote Starr via Twitter along with a picture of the two.

Lennon’s eldest son, Julian, shared a picture of his father and wrote, “As time goes by.”
