Jessie J announced Thursday (Jan. 3) that she would be taking a break from social media. In the new year she wants to focus on being “present” with the people she loves. The “Domino” singer cites “some unexpected heavy personal stuff” as the reason for the hiatus.
“When sadness hits it’s important we embrace it, so it doesn’t define us,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I have to practice on myself what I talk about in stage and in my music too. In a good way.”
Jessie J recently disclosed that her longtime bodyguard, Dave, died suddenly at the end of 2018, though it’s unclear if that’s the sole reason for her social media hiatus. “You weren’t just my security, we ARE family,” she wrote in a tribute post on Instagram.
The 30-year-old assures fans that this break will not be permanent and that future posts will be made by her team and not the singer herself.
The singer-songwriter is not the only star to take a break from social media. Ed Sheeran last posted on Twitter in July 2017 after reportedly telling The Sun, “I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things.” The singer-songwriter still posts on Instagram. In addition, Selena Gomez has been on a social media break since September, saying she wants to live in the present.
Jessie J ended her message wishing fans a happy new year, calling 2019 “the year of LIVING THE best life for YOU.”
