As the temperature creeps up, you might be planning to attend one of your oldest friend’s (socially distanced) pool parties, or throwing your own rival shindig on the same day. Or maybe with everything going on right now, you just need a pick-me-up. Whichever it may be, Vanderpump Rules star James Kennedy has the playlist for you.
The self-proclaimed White Kanye has curated a collection of tunes for Billboard to help get your hot-weather gatherings into a good groove. “[It has] all my favorite summer anthems to pick up that vibe instantly!” Kennedy tells Billboard of his selections, which were made before the killing of George Floyd. “I’ve also dedicated this playlist to all the feels and best moments of Vanderpump Rules.”
Of course, some of the most memorable moments from the reality show center around over-the-top drama, so Kennedy gives it proper recognition with the first song. “I opened up this playlist with a track named ‘Secrets.’ I think it’s pretty self-explanatory,” the British DJ laughs. “Vanderpump Rules has been fueled by secrets for years, so what better way than to just dive right in? I think this sets the tone, whether you wanna chill or get up and dance in the living room, which is what I hope you do.”
In addition to giving a nod to the drama on the Bravo hit — which airs part 2 of the reunion June 9 at 9 p.m. — Kennedy also sends a shout-out to two of his friends and costars, and of course, himself, in the playlist. “I’ve included some original tracks off my new EP, Jungle of Light, and also some collaborations I have with some of my other cast members, such as ‘Playboy Bunny’ featuring Lala Kent,” he explains before throwing some recognition at a former nemesis-turned-pal.
“An artist I’ve had the pleasure of being introduced to recently by my friend Katie Maloney-Schwartz is Freddie Dredd,” says the DJ of one of the musicians on his playlist. “I’m absolutely obsessed with this fresh vibe and crazy back beats.”
“I really had fun making this playlist,” adds Kennedy. “Everyone listening, stay safe out there — and much love!”
