Jack Antonoff can produce a hot record, he can play keys, guitar. Just don’t ask him to take you for a drive.

Antonoff stopped by NBC’s The Tonight Show on Wednesday (May 26) for a chat about the music making process during lockdown, winning big with Taylor Swift, and sneaky rogue behavior.

At the top, Antonoff talked about the challenges he and Swift faced in creating Folklore, and their fruitful trip to the Grammy Awards, where they were rewarded with the golden statuette for album of the year. The event itself was everything, from “cool,” “incredible,” “different” and apparently the most fun he’s had at an awards show.

The pandemic, yeah, that wasn’t so much fun. “No one had an easy time with anything,” he recounts. “I know how tough it was and how much we had to go through to get those records done to make them.” Winning the Grammy, he adds, “it meant a lot”.

As for cutting Swift’s album, “there was no cynicism when it came to work within the pandemic.”

Antonoff also shared some insights into “Chinatown,” his Bleachers collaboration with Bruce Springsteen. Antonoff admitted he didn’t hold a current drivers license when the pair cruised open-top for the music video. “I broke the law,” he said, with a touch of enthusiasm.

Check out the interview below and listen for Antonoff’s totally original “sour dough baker” analogy for producers making music in a pandemic.

Later on the late-night show, Antonoff discarded the specs and slotted into frontman position for a performance of Bleachers’ “How Dare You Want More,” lifted from the indie band’s forthcoming album Take The Sadness Out of Saturday Night. Bleachers’ third studio album is due out July 30.
