As these strange times continue, artists everywhere are being forced to figure out what to do with their upcoming projects. Some are staying the course, while others, like Sam Smith, are taking a different path.

In a note posted to their social media on Monday (March 30), Smith announced that, in light of the situation the world finds itself in, they would be not only pushing back the release of their fifth studio album, but also renaming it.

Originally titled To Die For and slated for a May 1 release, Smith stated that they felt it necessary to be sensitive to the evolving situation.

“I have done a lot of thinking the last few weeks and feel that the title of my album and imminent release doesn’t feel right,” they wrote in a note posted to their Twitter and Instagram. “I have to come to the decision to continue working on the album and make some important changes and additions. I will be renaming the album and pushing back the release date — both of which are to be confirmed at this time.”

The singer also added that they would still be putting the album out in 2020, though did they did not specify a date or timeframe. “There will be an album this year, I promise!” they wrote. “But until then, I am still going to bring out some new music over the next few months, which I’m incredibly excited about. Thank you for always being by my side and for you understanding and patience. I always want to do right by you. Always.”
