Demi Lovato dropped her cathartic 19-track album Dancing With the Devil… The Art of Starting Over on Friday morning (April 2) and one of the most anticipated tracks, “Met Him Last Night,” did not disappoint.

The superstar collab with Ariana Grande is a dark, twisted fantasy about chilling with the devil and finding out that, well, he’s kind of a funny, chill dude who might be relationship material.

“I seen the devil, yeah, I met him last night/ One conversation, now he’s spendin’ the night,” an urgent Lovato sings in a couplet that clearly has a much deeper meaning about flirting with disaster. “I think I love him, though I know it ain’t right,” the two singers wail together over a spare beat.

To no one’s surprise, Lovatics and Arianators lost their damn minds over the super-intense track about confronting demons in angel’s clothing.

“Got me like this THE HARMONIZATION HOLYYYYYYY,” wrote one fan about the singers’ interwoven vocal gymnastics, with another opining, “MET HIM LAST NIGHT IS SO GOOD, THEIR VOICES HARMONIZING TOGETHER I’M UNWELL.”

The singers, both managed by Scooter Braun, are a match made in heaven according to a tweet that read, “Demi and ariana literally are polar opposites vocally but somehow they meshed so f–king perfectly on met him last night. i don’t know how they did it tbh.”

Even Braun himself couldn’t quite deal, as evidenced by a tweet featuring a mind-blown emoji in reference to the song’s bombastic bridge. Lovato sat down with SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up on Hits 1 on Friday morning to talk about working with Grande, who she said first heard “Devil” back in 2019.

“She, you know, knew about the story behind it and everything. And she’s a close friend of mine, so she knew my story pretty well,” said Lovato. “And so when she started writing this song, she actually thought about me and… she wrote the song with me in mind, and then she played it for me. And I was like, ‘I love it. Like, you should just stay on the track.'”

Grande, though, said she initially preferred to be a “mystery, harmony lady,” as Demi convinced her that what the world wanted was to hear them together. “She was like, ‘are you sure?’ And I was like, ‘yes.’ And so she, she, you know, added her, her vocals and, she’s just so she’s so talented, so, so great,” Lovato said. “And I’m so grateful to have a friend like her.”
