Eddie Murphy is set to portray George Clinton, the leader of Parliament-Funkadelic, in an upcoming biopic directed by Bill Condon for Amazon MGM Studios. The script is being developed by Virgil Williams, based on an original draft by Max Werner. The project originated from Catherine Davis, a devoted fan of Clinton, who pitched the idea to Murphy.
Condon, who directed Murphy in “Dreamgirls,” which earned Murphy an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe, will also produce the film alongside Murphy and others.
The biopic is inspired by Clinton’s memoir, “Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?,” detailing his journey as a funk pioneer and the creation of Parliament-Funkadelic. Known for their eclectic sci-fi themes and psychedelic performances, Clinton and his group significantly impacted music and culture.
Murphy has previously collaborated with Amazon MGM Studios on projects like “Candy Cane Lane” and “Coming 2 America,” and is set to star in “The Pickup” alongside Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson.
Condon is currently working on “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a film adaptation of the Broadway musical. He is known for other works like “Kinsey” and “Gods and Monsters,” for which he won an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay.
Williams has received an Oscar nomination for “Mudbound” and co-wrote the adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson.”
Deadline was the first to report on this exciting project.
