It’s still hard to accept the sudden passing of 26-year-old MC Mac Miller. The rapper and producer died of an apparent drug overdose Friday, Sept. 7. He was a mentor and friend to many in the music industry spanning the worlds of hip-hop, dance and pop. The emotional response from many of music’s biggest and brightest shines a light on how great his passion was and how far his influence reached.
Diplo is the latest admirer to share a heartfelt memoriam. The Major Lazer founding member recalled how they met during his first tour in Australia. Mac was a wild, vibrant presence, as unhinged a character as he was a creative force. His friend remembers how Mac only became wilder and more talented each passing year.
“He drank whiskey at (a) Major Lazer after-party til 4 am,” Diplo writes on Instagram, “went back to festival at midday .. played piano like Mozart with the sun blazing down on him.. throw up on stage. Cry a bit, rap some more then pass out in the grass and text me a few hours like where we going next.”
“He was always there in the middle of the best moments,” Diplo continues. “If there wasn’t a vibe, he created it and made the room brighter .. He radiated positivity, but there wasn’t a balance.. The other side was he was deeply insecure and always found substitution for what was missing in his life.”
Diplo urges everyone to catch up with loved ones while they can and always look out for those who may be struggling.
