Diplo and RL Grime go way back. Like, back to the days when the trap lord producer’s biggest hits were coming from a house moniker called Clockwork. Now, the two have shared an in-depth conversation with fans on Thursday (Sept. 27).

Diplo made the young man’s life when he released some tunes on Mad Decent. Of course, RL Grime has gone on to do big things all on his own, and Diplo recently sat down with his old pal to go over some of his career twists and turns, and Diplo drops some cool knowledge about his own experience with the scene through years.

RL Grime remembers the exact moment he put Clockwork away.

“It was EDC maybe 2013 or 2014, and I was playing a Clockwork set,” he explains. “I had a full panic attack when I was playing, because I was like, ‘Oh, shit, I just hate this music. I don’t wanna play this.’ I remember right after I finished the set, I was like, ‘I don’t wanna do this anymore,’ but I didn’t know what to do because I had this fan base of people who knew me for that stuff and I think at the time I was trying to keep RL Grime separate and I didn’t want people to know.”

“It’s funny how serious we took those things back then,” Diplo laughs. “In retrospect, it’s like, ‘Wow, you can do whatever you want.’ It doesn’t matter.”

He took the bet on RL Grime, and when he dropped the “Mercy” remix, things exploded. They chat about the old Soundcloud days when “you could just do a remix and put it on Soundcloud and it would be chill.” The friends talk about RL Grime’s debut album Void and the subsequent, gruesome tour. They touch on finding the balance between club sets and whole, personal, artistic expressions. Of course, they get to the new RL Grime album and all the things that informed his new sound.

It’s a really enlightening chat between two heavyweights. Enjoy the 20-plus minute video below.
