Demi Lovato stopped by Good Morning America virtually on Wednesday (Sept. 9) t0 talk about her return to music, mental health and more.

Explaining that the outbreak of COVID-19 postponed her planned album rollout, the pop star called the first few weeks of the pandemic “confusing” for her. “I was so prepared to start my ‘comeback,’ release music that I hadn’t released in years and talk about things that I’ve wanted to talk about for so long,” she told host Amy Robach.

The pop star also opened up about fighting mental health stigma following her near-fatal overdose and hospitalization in July 2018. “Not necessarily ashamed,” she said of her relationship to her own mental health struggles, “but maybe just a little embarrassed that I’ve gone through some of the things or made some of the choices that I’ve made. And I think that’s natural for anybody that’s made mistakes in their mental illnesses. But I also know part of getting rid of the stigma is spreading the awareness and talking about it.”

Speaking of her recent beachside engagement to Max Ehrich, Lovato couldn’t help but gush during the interview about her husband-to-be. “I don’t think that anybody can say that they’ve had a breezy time [during the pandemic]. I mean, I got engaged! Things have been going great in my personal life, but I still have had difficult times because that’s the reality of life,” she said. “There’s never been a more perfect person to step foot in my life, at such the perfect timing too, as well.”

While the superstar dropped the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio set, self-empowerment anthem “I Love Me,” back at the beginning of March — as well as its Travis Barker-assisted remix — she admitted there’s still no timeline for continuing to mount her big comeback. “I wish I had the secret date,” she concluded, “I just genuinely don’t know when it’s gonna be done.”
