It’s been ten years since Poot Lovato made her bizarre internet debut — and according to Demi Lovato, she won’t be making a return any time soon.
On Monday (April 21), the singer shared a TikTok poking fun at the infamous 2015 meme. In the clip, Lovato lip-syncs to an audio that begins with the prompt, “When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…”
Lovato responds with a dry, sarcastic expression, mouthing the words, “What an offer, let me sleep on it though.”
The caption makes it crystal clear: “And I’m never letting her out.”
The post is just the latest in a series of nods Lovato has made to Poot, a fictional character that originated from a photoshopped and unflattering image of the pop star taken at the 2014 Royal Variety Performance. In 2015, a Tumblr user jokingly introduced the altered image as “Demi’s twin sister.”
“She was locked in a basement her whole life,” the post read. “This picture was taken the first time she went outside. Her name is Poot.”
The ridiculous backstory — totally made up — quickly caught fire online. Though Lovato initially seemed annoyed, tweeting, “Cool to see a s–tty angle turn into a meme that circulates the Internet to people’s amusement,” they’ve since leaned into the joke.
In 2018, they tweeted, “Poot is locked up … She’s allergic to sunlight,” and more recently in 2023, they celebrated their 31st birthday with cupcakes featuring edible images of Poot.
Lovato’s latest TikTok confirms what fans already suspected — Poot isn’t going anywhere. Or rather, she’s staying exactly where she is.
