Charlie Puth isn’t here for a summer fling: He’s ready for a “Girlfriend,” which he sings about in his first single of 2020 that dropped today (June 25) via Atlantic/Rumson Records.
With longer, warmer days on the horizon, Puth is looking to settle down with a girl for a long-term commitment (“This is more than just a phase,” he croons in the chorus) as things between the two keep heating up. The 28-year-old star expresses his deep feelings through his signature falsetto and self-produced infectious pop beat, with lyrics co-written by his longtime collaborator J Kash, whom he also worked with for “Attention,” “How Long” and “The Way I Am.”
“I am very bad at communicating, so most of the time, I just express my feelings in my music and ‘Girlfriend’ is an example of that. The song is about being persistent and letting someone know that your feelings for them aren’t going to just go away,” Puth said in a press release. “But rather, they’re always going to be there, and you can’t sleep another night until you have that person by your side every day. But it’s really intense to say all that out loud, so I just put it in a song to make it a little easier for myself.”
