A true legend and absolute unit of house and techno, British DJ Carl Cox spent fifteen years mixing and sweating his ass off to become the human embodiment of iconic nightclub Space Ibiza. It was a rite of passage for thousands of ravers across generations to dance on its hallowed floor. His marathon set on the nightclub’s final night will forever be one of Cox’s most bittersweet memories — but what if he brings it back?
He’s the only man to do it, with the backing of the club’s ownership and management team, of course. He promised to do just that in a recent interview with Be-At TV, the same digital streaming platform which broadcasted his closing set. The producer is quoted as saying it’s all but done — that, and it needs to settle on a location.
“Space was definitely the place for me,” Cox is quoted, as reported by online source EDMSauce. “We have the idea of bringing Space back next year for maybe an opening and closing, but apart from that we are actually looking for a new area to build a new Space somewhere on the island…yes, it’s going to happen — there’s no doubt about that! I’m going to bring it back in the near or the distant future. I mean, I’ve lost my home and I need to build a new one.
“Space was built as an independent club in Playa d’en Bossa,” Cox continues. “Playa d’en Bossa only became Playa d’en Bossa because of Space. The new Space doesn’t actually have to be on Playa d’en Bossa. Obviously, we need someplace where it’s a little bit quiet. There is no way I’m going to build a Space nightclub next to Ushuaia or anything…we will go to a completely new place with a new concept. But the idea is to have the same people who made Space and have people who want to support me in my quest to create a new Space back on the island.”
Great news for those who never made it out or who still miss the magic of the old digs. The original building still operates as a nightclub, now under new management under the successful brand Hï Ibiza.
