As 2018 comes to a close, Camila Cabello sat down with Billboard to run through some of her defining moments of the year, including writing her album, singing live with her father in Mexico City and touring with Taylor Swift.
One memorable moment that Cabello makes note of is the creation of her self-titled album — which, in hindsight, she reveals she actually wishes she called Never Be the Same.
“These songs to me, now, represent this era in my life,” she says. “And just, for every song now, it’s not only just the writing and making process in the studio, but now there’s so many memories attached to it. Now I have tour memories attached to it, and a crowd of people singing the words to a song that I wrote. I just can never get enough of making music and being in the studio. So that’s my favorite place to be. So I can’t wait for the second time around.”
Cabello tells Billboard that another defining moment of 2018 was performing live with her father in Mexico City during her first solo show there. “I grew up with my dad singing all the time,” she shares. “He and my grandma were probably the two people in my life that most planted that seed of loving music. And it was his first time singing in front of people. It was in front of 12,000 people and his entire family, his best friends. And we sang, basically, a love song to Mexico. I felt so connected to my culture, and my roots, and my dad. It just meant a lot to me.”
A third notable moment Cabello mentions is touring with Taylor Swift. The first time she arrived on stage to a crowd of 60,000 people, the “Havana” singer was, as she says, shaking in her boots.
“I’ve been a huge fan of Taylor Swift since I was like 13 years old,” she confesses, ”And I know literally all of her songs. She was one of the people that really inspired me to start songwriting, and going on tour with her was a really full circle moment for me.”
“I also felt really at home because I kinda felt like a Swiftie, also,” she continues. “So I was just like, I belong here. I’m at a Taylor Swift concert, I’m so in my natural habitat. I hope she doesn’t think that’s weird, I know she doesn’t because I told her before. But it was really, really great and fun as a tour, also surreal for me as a Swifter.”
