In October, Burning Man announced Metamorphoses as its 2019 theme, and now, we get a first look at the main structure.

The Temple of Direction was designed by San Francisco-based artist Geordie Van Der Bosch. Its tiered top is inspired by the hundreds of red torii gates of the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. It’s built as a usable hallway and invites guests to move throughout the structure.

“This linear form reflects the passage of life with its beginning, middle, and end,” Katie Hazard writes in the official Burning Man Journal. “Throughout the structure there are areas that reflect this journey: narrow & wide spaces, bright & dark spaces, and tunnels that create intimate physical settings. Meanwhile, a large central hall, an altar, and many shelves for offerings create the setting for our collective experience.”

Burning Man invites volunteers to join the building process in the Oakland, Calif., area, and fundraising begins in early 2019. Burning Man will return to its home in Black Rock, Nev., Sunday, Aug. 25, to Monday, Sept. 2. Check the website for ways to participate, and check the The Temple of Direction designs below.

Your 2019 Temple: “The Temple of Direction” by Geordie Van Der Bosch. Katie Hazard writes: “The Temple of Direction is a linear space, capturing the elegance and austerity of the torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Japan, where the artist previously lived. The linear lines form a passage that expands into a large hall, eliciting both a physical experience and a metaphysical journey. It’s a space that responds to the openness of the playa by creating a framework that encourages you to travel from end to end.” Read more in the Burning Man Journal! | Renderings from Geordie Van Der Bosch | #burningman #brc #blackrockcity #temple2019 #temple #radicalselfexpression #participation #thankslarry
