Billie Eilish Hits a Ghost Mall in Video For Throbbing New Single ‘Therefore I Am’

Billie Eilish released her latest single “Therefore I Am” on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 12), less than a week after surprising fans with the news that the song was on its way.

The dark, bouncing track came with a pandemic-appropriate video in which Eilish gets her steps in at an abandoned mall, running around to hit all her favorite stores and snack spots, swiping up soft pretzels and doughnuts while singing about how much you don’t know about her.

Rocking an oversized cardigan and shorts, Eilish strolls through the legendary Glendale Galleria mall while singing, “I don’t want press to put your name next to mine/ We’re on different lines so I/ Wanna be nice enough/ They don’t call my bluff/ ‘Cause I hate to find/ Articles, articles, articles/ I’d rather you remain unremarkable/ Got a lot of interviews, interviews, interviews.” The dark pop track with one of her signature throbbing beats and whispery vocals appears to be a reckon with the global stardom Eilish has achieved over the past two years.

“Did you have fun?/ I really couldn’t care less/ And you can give ’em my best/ But just know/ I’m not your friend/ Or anything, damn,” she says bitingly while running around with abandon in the video the 18-year-old directed in her teen retail stomping grounds.

The five-time Grammy winner first teased the track, which was co-written and produced by brother Finneas, just days ago, captioning an Instagram post of the single’s artsy cover art, “I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS ONE” on Monday (Nov. 9). (For his part, her older brother also shared his enthusiasm for the new song on his since-deleted Instagram Story, writing, “Not to toot our own horn but this song is f–king sick.”)

“Therefore I Am” marks Eilish’s first new release since she dropped introspective quarantine anthem “My Future,” which bowed at No. 6 on the Hot 100 back in July. Early last month, she also unveiled the long-awaited music video for “No Time to Die,” her theme song for the upcoming — and continuously delayed — James Bond film of the same name.

Additionally, the teenage superstar recently took her canceled North American tour digital. In late October, she presented Where Do We Go? The Livestream as a virtual concert experience inspired by the arena tour — which was shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Eilish will perform the song live for the first time on Nov. 22 at the 2020 American Music Awards.
