Betty Who is the latest artist to stop by NPR for a Tiny Desk Concert, and she nailed it.
The singer, who usually comes equipped with bouncy synths, catchy choruses and choreographed dance moves, decided to strip things down and show us her jazz skills. She started the first song of the set, “Taste,” from her latest album Betty, with her trusty cello, bringing things way down.
Afterward, she admitted that the rendition actually made her really emotional for a moment. “When I was probably 14 or 15, I saw my first Tiny Desk Concert and I remember thinking to myself, ‘One day I’m gonna do that.'”
She continued, “I studied classical music forever and I played cello forever and ever and I didn’t want to be the girl who played cello and sang. Because that girl seems really far away from ass-out, sparkle-covered, pop-star me. And I told myself I was always going to commit to the latter and dance and make that vision come true and then one day whip out my cello and be like, ‘Oh, P.S.'”
She continued to play the Betty, Pt. 1 track “Friend Like Me,” with the help of her acoustic guitar and the rest of her band. She wrapped the set up with an uplifting crowd sing-along to “I Remember.”
