Ben Platt dropped the lyric video for his winning song from NBC’s Songland on Monday (June 8).

Titled “Everything I Did to Get to You,” the emotional power ballad was written by Songland contestant David Davis with help from mentor Ryan Tedder, and finds the Broadway star looking back on the long road he took to reach a happy ending with a new love.

“All the hearts I ever held just held me back/ I’ve been bruised and burned but somehow I’m intact/ All the times I thought I might’ve reached the end/ I’d do it all again/ Everything I did to get to you/ Everything I did to get to you,” Platt croons on the chorus while backed by a gospel choir.

“I feel like, particularly in relationships, I’ve gotten to a lot of crossroads where things that you’ve been holding on to that have all this negative connotation, you slowly realize, like, one at a time, like, why they were necessary and why they happened. So that resonates [with me] for sure,” Platt dished upon hearing the song, which was originally titled “Everything It Took to Get to You,” for the first time.

Kylie Rothfield, a contestant on Team Alicia during Season 11 of The Voice, also competed on the penultimate episode of Songland’s second season, ultimately coming up short in her collaboration with hit songwriter Ester Dean.

The song arrives on the heels of the deluxe edition of Platt’s debut album Sing to Me Instead, featuring new tracks “Rain” and “So Will I,” as well as the release of his 2020 Netflix concert special filmed at Radio City Music Hall.
