After announcing through her website that she will release her first single in years — “Head Above Water” — on Sept. 19, Avril Lavigne took to Twitter on Thursday (Sept. 13) to share a sneak peek of her long-awaited comeback with fans.

In an emotional letter to fans, the singer opened up about her fight with Lyme Disease, a condition that has been keeping her away from working on new music for years. Lavigne shares that she penned the single from bed, feeling like she was dying. “I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down,” she explains. “I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air.”

Lavigne also offers a video clip with multiple shots of the ocean as she sings the heartfelt lyrics, “I’ve gotta keep the calm before the storm/I don’t want less, I don’t want more/Must bar the windows and the doors/To keep me safe, to keep me warm.”

The singer also shared two gorgeous pictures where she appears standing on rocks in front of a body of water, wearing a flow, goddess-like white kimono — a true metaphor of how she transformed her struggle into a powerful body of music.
